So you have a website, but no one is visiting it. On an internet crowded with billions of websites, how can you get noticed and get traffic to your website? Today we’ll look at 10 powerful ways that will help your website get found online.
1. Search Engine Optimization
Don’t expect people to search for your business by name. Think of what people type into Google when searching for a product or service you offer. Those keywords are what you need to make sure to include frequently on your website.
Figuring out what keywords to use can be challenging, but rewarding. Google will start showing your site to people who search for those words if you implement it right. There are many excellent tools to help you find the right words and ensure that you add them correctly to your site.
I’ll do another post teaching these tools in more depth, but here are some free ones you can use to get started:
Using SEO to appear on Google is always the first recommended strategy to get more traffic to your website, but it can be difficult due to all the competition out there, and it could take as long as half a year to start seeing results from your labors.
Fortunately, there are alternatives that can get traffic to your site much sooner, and Pinterest is one very powerful option. Results from Pinterest regularly position highly in Google search results, but the competition on Pinterest is much lower than on Google.
That means if you create quality, valuable images (“pins”) on Pinterest that link to your site, you are much more likely to get traffic from them. Creating these pins isn’t as hard as it may sound. Tools like Canva come with lots of ready-to-use templates to get you started.
This strategy can work so well, it regularly brings in over 1000 daily visits to one of the sites we manage, myenglishgoals.com. It may take a few months to start to see traffic from Pinterest as well, but it tends to be much faster than waiting for results to come from Google.
When another website links back to a page on your site, that is a backlink. The more backlinks you have, the more Google will trust your site to be authoritative and valuable, and the more it will show your site to people.
How can you get backlinks from other sites? One simple way is to ask them to include your site on theirs, for example on their resource page. If your business is selling cat food, you might want to reach out to animal stores, veterinarians, etc. and ask to be included on their site. Many will ignore your request, but some will answer.
To improve your chances of getting linked on other websites, offer them something of value. For example, one tactic I’ve used is to scan websites for broken images or links and then contact the site owner to notify them so that they can fix the problem. They’re grateful for this type of unsolicited help. Then I’ll mention my site and how it might be a good fit for their resources page. This method of offering some value instead of only asking for their help makes them far more likely to work with me.
4. Commenting on forum sites or writing for media platforms
What problem does your service or product solve? Consider going to websites like Quora or Reddit and searching for posts where people talk about these types of problems. Then answer them with your recommendations based on your experience. You can include a link to your website for reference.
These types of posts don’t need to be salesy or spammy. Just offer helpful recommendations and refer to your site for more info.
Another thing you can do is post on platforms such as Medium, writing about a problem and a solution that could interest your potential customers. You can refer to your website as an option that can solve their problem or give more information.
Sites like Quora, Reddit and Medium are much more likely to appear on Google since they are so well-known, and if your website is linked to them, it will help you get noticed and bring you some traffic.
5. Post on social media
Does your website have a Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or LinkedIn account? Regularly posting to these accounts can help bring some traffic to your site. Additionally, having them allows you to start building an audience on these platforms. That can come in real handy when you come out with new products and services you want to promote.
6. Guest blogging
A good way to get eyeballs on your site is to post on other more-popular blogs. Contact other bloggers in your niche or in a similar field and ask if you can write an article for their blog. Present an interesting article idea and they’ll likely accept your offer.
This method of guest blogging works because bigger bloggers will be happy to have more useful content on their site, and you’ll be able to link back to your site (a backlink!) and get in front of their audience.
7. Email marketing
Do you have an email list to market to? If not, why don’t you start one? Provide opt-in forms on your site with an appealing reason for people to sign up. For example you might provide exclusive offers or discounts to people who sign up, or perhaps you can give them a lead magnet (a helpful document or resource) to entice them to sign up for your list.
Once you have an email list of potential clients, you can send them updates, announcements and offers that link back to your site and keep them coming back. The Marketing Rule of 7 suggests that an average prospect needs to hear your message 7 times before they’ll convert into a buying customer. Having them on an email list allows you to target them multiple times with multiple marketing messages.

8. Internal links
When a visitor comes to your site, you want to keep them there as long as possible. The more they consume on your site, the more likely they’ll convert into customers.
To keep them on your site, link to your own content frequently throughout your site. Do you run a blog? Make sure you’re linking related posts together so that your visitors will be more likely to keep reading and consuming your content. This can turn into the most valuable type of traffic for you.
9. Reach out to influencers
Building your own audience from scratch can be slow. But there are ways to use the audiences of others to drive lots of traffic to your site.
Try reaching out to influencers, people with large followings on platforms like YouTube and Instagram to see if they’d be willing to mention or link to your site in front of their large audiences.
Find influencers who are in niches related to your own. You could offer to do an interview with them, provide a free resource for their audience, or even offer them a cut of any profit you make in an affiliate arrangement.
While the biggest influencers may be out of your reach, many smaller influencers would be glad to be in contact and work with more people in their field.
10. Promote your site with paid ads
Using paid ads on platforms like Google and Facebook is one of the most well-known strategies for driving quick traffic to websites. But it can be tricky to learn how to do it correctly so that you earn more than you spend. This is why I place it last on this list.
Even if you end up losing some money from using paid ads, it’s still worth investing a little bit in order to learn how to use them. And those leads you get will learn about your business and have you in mind for the future even if they don’t convert into customers now.
Other methods of getting traffic to your website
Beyond the 10 ways I’ve listed to drive traffic to your site, there are countless other strategies you can use. Some of them include:
- Creating SlideShare presentations
- Starting a YouTube channel
- Configuring your Google My Business account
- Getting listed on online directories
The important thing is that you have a strategy in place for how you will get that elusive traffic to your site so that you can show what you have to offer to the world and get your paying clients.
